Radical new approach to transport policy needed says government advisor: New road projects not an answer to Scotland's transport policy

1 July 2010

Research commissioned by the Scottish Government has shown that current transport policy will only be able to achieve half of the emission reductions needed to meet the Scottish Climate Change Act. How are SSDF members already contributing to sustainable travel in Scotland?

The report ‘Getting There’ highlights the gap between current trends and Government’s stated aims, and sets out solutions to help Government bridge this gap and deliver a sustainable transport system for Scotland.

Its vision is a transport system in which the most desitrable way of getting somewhere is also the one with the most benefits to our health, environment, community. economy and society.

An increase in people choosing active travel to get to their places of work and education is one example of sustainable travel.

'A Better Way to Work' is a travel choice project hosted by the Bike Station, Edinburgh's cycling charity, with the aim to help Edinburgh workers change their commuting habits. By tailoring it's free services, which include cycle training, travel planning advice and a loan bike scheme, to the needs and requirements of each business, the Bike Station helps encourage employees to make travel choices that are healthier, wealthier and better for the environment.

An open door event for businesses to find out more about the project is taking place in Edinburgh on the 26th August.
