Creating a Sustainable Scotland ConferenceCreating a Sustainable Scotland, roles, responsibility and scrutiny

Holyrood conferences and SDC Scotland invite you to discuss key sustainable development issues and how to hold the Scottish Government to account on its policies when SDC is closed down on 31st March this year.

This event will look at what the key issues are for Scotland’s long term future like the resilience and sustainability of our communities, businesses and wider economy.  How can the sustainability agenda be pursued and taken forward in a climate of cuts? Who can step in to hold Government to account? Can the Parliament, the Committee on Climate Change and Audit Scotland fill the gap and work together to ensure a robust scrutiny system? Do NGO’s have capacity to take on SDC’s work at a financially difficult time?

 SDC Commissioner Jan Bebbington and Professor Tim Jackson will set the scene for debate with MSP’s and sustainability experts. A range of workshops will get all delegates involved in shaping a strong sustainable development alliance for Scotland. Enter the promotional code ‘SDC’ on the booking page to get a reduced delegate rate of £99+VAT

SCVOJoin SSDF at The Gathering, 23rd-24th February - workshop time tbc

To create real and long-lasting behaviour change we need more than just public awareness and marketing campaigns. Through case studies of sustainable behaviour change, SSDF will be running a workshop at the SCVO Gathering that will focus on Dr Doug McKenzie-Mohr’s theory of ‘Community Based Social Marketing.

Community-based social marketing involves five steps:

  1. Selecting which behavior to target;
  2. Identifying the barriers and benefits to the selected behavior;
  3. Developing a strategy that reduces barriers to the behavior to be promoted, while simultaneously increasing the behavior’s perceived benefits;
  4. Piloting the strategy;
  5. Broad scale implementation and ongoing evaluation once the strategy has been broadly implemented.

This highly successful technique has been used across the world to develop behaviour change programmes. Participants will examine past examples of the theory in practice and will take away ideas and clear overview of the theory that can be applied in their own work.

This workshop is relevant to anyone involved in developing programmes to change behaviours at a community level and can be applied more widely than sustainability.
