Working Principles

SSDF Strategic Aims and Objectives

• To facilitate debate on how best to achieve sustainable development

• To facilitate sharing of good practice for achieving sustainable development

• To encourage participation and action in pursuit of sustainable development

• To raise awareness and understanding of sustainable development and its implications for individuals and organisations in Scotland

• To recommend action for achievement of sustainable development

• To ensure the organisational sustainability of the Forum for delivering its aims

Working Methods

The Forum is guided by an elected Board. We hold large plenary meetings for members as well as smaller workshop of specific topics. Participation of members is based on the expertise and interest in the topic.

Working Principles of the Forum

• Constructive and solution-oriented, with practical and realistic outputs

• Deliberations take a wide perspective and see Scotland in a global context

• Collaboration based on mutual respect between the representatives of different sectors with a commitment to serving the public good

• Guided by the Principles of Sustainable Development

Membership

The Forum is open and accessible to anyone who is interested in participating.

Board

The Board is responsible for keeping an overview of the business operation and strategic direction. Board members meet at least four times per year.

Advisory Group

The Advisory Group assists with the planning of plenaries and workshops and provide expert advice on particular topics.

Chairperson

The Chairperson is independent and elected by Board. S/he is required to possess the personal skills necessary to advance sustainable development in Scotland while inspiring varying interests and opinions.

Their primary role is to be the public face of the Scottish Sustainable Development Forum as well as undertaking the following:

• Presiding over meetings of the Forum and Steering Group

• Assisting the Forum and the Steering Group to develop a work programme and to ensure that it is taken forward in line with the working principles

• Supporting the work of the Secretariat and topic sub-groups

Secretariat

The Secretariat works under the guidance of the Steering Group. The main tasks are:

• Maintaining records of Forum members and providing regular updates about the work of the Forum and Board and Advisory Group meetings

• Arranging plenary and other workshops and meetings as directed

• Arranging, taking minutes and co-ordinating and issuing papers for the meetings of the Board and Advisory Group and providing support for the topic sub-groups

• Promoting the Forum and its work to key stakeholders across Scotland, including the management of a simple website

• Attracting new participants to the work of the Forum

Secretariat support for the SSDF Board and Advisory Group is provided by the Sustainable Development Commission Scotland.
